Loft Extensions

The pitched roofs of Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian homes in London often conceal a significant volume of loft space suitable for conversion to a habitable room:
s Converting your existing loft space may require modest external alterations, and can therefore often be carried out under permitted development rather than having to obtain full planning permission. Listed buildings or properties in a conservation area do not have permitted development rights so full planning approval must be gained for any extension.
s Permitted development usually allows a homeowner to add velux windows to the front face of the roof, with a dormer window extending to the rear of the property.
s As a rule of thumb, if there is at least 2.3 metres from the floor to the highest point in your loft, then the space may be suitable for a conversion.

s A loft extension can be a relatively fast process on site, with build times for a straightforward project of around 4 - 8 weeks. The major structural works consist of removing the existing timber joists and inserting a new floor, with steel beams if required.
s Up to 25 percent of heat loss in un-modernised homes is through the loft. Architecture for London works to produce sustainable designs with high performance insulation that enables reductions in home energy consumption.
