Eleven Deaths On KY Roadways Last Week

FRANKFORT, KY (7/11/11) – According to Kentucky State Police, Preliminary statistics indicate that 11 people died in 11 separate crashes on Kentucky’s roadways from Tuesday, July 5 through Sunday, July 10, 2011.
Seven of the victims were traveling in motor vehicles. One was not wearing a seat belt. Two of the fatalities were the result of crashes involving alcohol. Three of the fatalities were riding motorcycles and not wearing helmets. One fatality involved an animal-drawn vehicle.

Two single-fatality crashes occurred in Christian County. One single-fatality crash occurred in each of the following counties: Boyd, Carter, Floyd, Henderson Knott, Meade, Rowan, Taylor and Warren.

Through July 10, preliminary statistics indicate that 337 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2011. This is 36 fewer than reported for this time period in 2010. Of the 269 motor vehicle fatalities, 149 victims were not wearing seat belts. Of the 28 motorcycle fatalities, 16 were not wearing helmets. Eight of the nine ATV fatalities were not wearing helmets. The one scooter fatality was not wearing a helmet. Two bicycle riders have lost their lives. Twenty-seven pedestrians have been killed. One fatality resulted when a motor vehicle struck an animal-drawn vehicle. A total of 52 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol.

Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.

These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
