Storms Knock Out Power to 615,000 in Illinois

CHICAGO -- Strong winds and rain pounded Illinois, knocking out power to 615,000 utility customers in northern Illinois.

ComEd spokeswoman Arlana Johnson says the largest number of outages was in Chicago's north suburbs where 280,000 customers were in the dark. Power was also out Monday for 156,000 customers west of the city, 80,000 in the southern region and 108,000 in the city of Chicago and Maywood.

ComEd has nearly 400 repair crews out trying to restore service.

The fast-moving storm downed trees, damaged property and hampered travel throughout the Chicago area.

The Chicago Department of Aviation reports that flights were stopped at both O'Hare and Midway airports because of the storms. And the Metra commuter rail service stopped trains and warned of delays of up to an hour.
